As an older adult, or as an adult child or caregiver of one, it can be overwhelming to know what senior living and healthcare options exist and where to begin when looking into them. The good news is that there are experts who can help you and your family navigate the major life decisions that need to be made as you age.
By familiarizing yourself with different lifestyle and care options for older adults, you’ll be prepared when the time comes to utilize senior living or hospice services. There are many types of senior living communities and different levels of care provided at each. Some cater to adults aged 55+ with no healthcare support. Other communities provide multiple levels of care on one campus, including assisted living, memory support and long-term care. Hospice is a special type of care typically reserved for the last six months of life and is focused on providing comfort and improving quality of life. It can be provided in the home, a hospice care center or a healthcare center like the ones many senior living communities provide. When comparing your options, your goal should be to find the right option for yourself or your loved one. Here are some things to consider:
- Do you or your loved one want to remain in your own home?
- Are you familiar with the different types of senior living available in your area and the services and amenities each provides?
- Do your loved ones know your preferences? (i.e. staying at home, moving to a community, etc).
If you are unsure about the answers to these questions, contact the Cincinnati Senior Connection Foundation or Hospice of Southwest Ohio for help.
