Relief for you and your family

When you’re taking care of a hospice patient in a home setting, it can sometimes feel overwhelming. Balancing the rest of your life while supporting a loved one in hospice can be exhausting. Many people need additional help, have an event they need to attend, travel requirements or just need a little break.

Our nurses and social workers are available for short-term respite care in our Madeira Care Center or nursing facilities. Respite care is offered in our Care Center for a five-day period. The room and board during those five days is covered by Medicare each month.

What does respite care include?

Hospice of Southwest Ohio provides respite care by offering relief for caregivers when they need additional support. Respite care is available for a few hours up to five days, and anywhere in between.

Our team helps out in situations when:

  • Caregivers are suffering from physical or emotional exhaustion from taking care of a patient around the clock
  • Caregivers would like to attend a family event such as a wedding, funeral, etc.
  • Caregivers are ill and cannot take care of the patient while recovering

Respite care provides relatives with a temporary rest from caregiving, while the patient continues to receive care in a safe environment. Using respite services can support and strengthen your family’s ability to be caregivers. By using respite care, you’ll be better able to care for your loved one when you take the time to care for yourself.

Where is respite care available?

Our team provides respite care in our Care Center in Madeira, Ohio, centrally located near Cincinnati.

Who pays for respite care?

Medicare typically covers all expenses at an approved Medicare facility (usually a hospice inpatient facility, hospital or long-term care/nursing home) for up to five days of respite care at a time. Most private insurances don’t cover the cost of respite care.

Does respite care require a doctor referral?

Yes. The patient has to be a hospice patient already to qualify for respite care, and they have a DNR-CC code status.
